In the context of eCommerce, cross-selling is to offer customers a more expensive version of the same product. Upselling is to offer customers a related product.
For example, you might be selling a wooden chess set on your website and would like to upsell it with another wooden chess set that has more pieces or one that comes with a leather carrying case. In this case, you might decide to include the second item in your shopping cart as soon as someone adds their first purchase into their cart. The second item will have an additional price tag attached so that when they check out, they pay for both items together—giving them access to both products at once instead of having two separate transactions for each individual product!
